Upcoming Event: 27th LGW’s International Congress on Education

This Saturday, March 2nd, from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM, the Paiva Netto Educational Center, maintained by the Legion of Good Will of the United States, will host the 27th LGW’s International Congress on Education. The event will address the topic: “Inclusion for Equity in Education: a View Beyond the Intellect.” Its goal is to share paths that promote inclusive education and to serve as a space where educators, social workers, psychologists, and other interested people can exchange their knowledge on pedagogical practices and innovative ideas.
In a world where educational disparities persist, the Congress seeks to delve into strategies and adaptations that go beyond traditional methods to ensure equitable access to quality education for all learners. With a focus on addressing the diverse needs of students, the event’s program includes lectures and practical workshops that will center on pedagogical and social approaches to support inclusive learning environments.
The event date marks the first anniversary of the LGW’s educational center in the United States and celebrates the 83rd birthday of the president of the Organization, José de Paiva Netto. He is the creator of the Congress on Education, which draws up the guidelines for the LGW’s schools towards an Education with Ecumenical Spirituality.
To meet the diverse needs of inclusive and equitable education for all, the event brings together the following guest speakers:
Barbara Clark is a graduate of Spelman College (Atlanta, GA) and Indiana University. She was the supervisor of Special Services in Jersey City and retired as the director of Special Services at the Orange Public School District.
Topic: Inclusion: fostering each child’s academic, social, and emotional growth.
Grace Blanco holds a master’s degree in Education Leadership and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from St. Elizabeth University. She has a certificate in Early Childhood Leadership from Harvard University and is the director at Ironbound Early Learning Center (ELC) for the Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC).
Topic: Perspectives on Inclusive Education in Early Childhood Education.
Luis Henriques holds a bachelor’s degree in History and a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Montclair State University. He has worked as vice principal, Athletic director, and Social Studies teacher at East Side High School and is currently the principal at Oliver Street School.
Topic: Perspectives on Inclusive Education in Elementary School.
Brian Donovan holds degrees in Social Studies, Bilingual Education, Geography, and Education, with a minor in Spanish, and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Montclair State University. He is the instructional vice principal at East Side High School.

Maria Suelí Periotto holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in Education from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). She is the LGW’s educational superintendent and supervisor of the pedagogical line applied in the Legion of Good Will's schools.

Mariana Tamasan holds a master’s degree in Teaching from Montclair State University, an Education Specialist degree from Seton Hall University, and professional training from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is an early childhood educator with classroom experience in public and private schools in New Jersey as well as a developmental interventionist in early intervention programs.
Pedagogical workshop in English: Art and Play as Learning Strategies.
Marcelo Rafael is an educator and pedagogue with a background in Performing Arts. He specialized in Didactics in Higher Education, Psychodrama, Art Therapy, and Institutional Psychopedagogy. He is a teacher at the José de Paiva Netto Educational Institute and the principal of the Moriah Educational Center, both in São Paulo, Brazil.
